While in conversation with Dr Gupta , Deputy Director, (CRC) ACTREC (Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer) , Kharghar. It was a meeting well over an hour that covered, there were so many insights. Here are a few important facts.
Did you know …..
- There are several different types of breast cancer. The best approach to treating the disease is determined by the concerned doctor.
- Tata Memorial Hospital is able to give free post operative treatment to financially constrained patients due to donations received .
- Of these several are treated with 6-8cycles of chemotherapy and are cancer free.
However about 50-60 cases need the more expensive treatment (for example Herceptin (chemical name: trastuzumab), which works against HER2-positive breast cancers) and the dosage depends on the weight of the patient.
Generally the treatment costs about Rs 7-8 lakhs a year (about USD 10,500/- to 12,000/-). However currently the patient can be treated for just about 3months at a cost of Rs 2 lakhs. ( about USD3,000/- )
