While in conversation with Dr Gupta , Deputy Director, (CRC)  ACTREC (Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer) , Kharghar. It was a meeting well over an hour that covered, there were so many insights. Here are a few important facts.

Did you know …..

  1. There are several different types of breast cancer. The best approach to treating the disease is determined by the concerned doctor.
  2. Tata Memorial Hospital  is able to give free post operative treatment to financially constrained patients due to donations received .
  3. Of these several are treated with 6-8cycles of chemotherapy and are cancer free.

However about 50-60 cases need the more expensive treatment (for example Herceptin (chemical name: trastuzumab), which works against HER2-positive breast cancers) and the dosage depends on the weight of the patient.

Generally the treatment costs about Rs 7-8 lakhs a year (about USD 10,500/- to 12,000/-). However currently the patient can be treated for just about 3months at a cost of Rs 2 lakhs. ( about USD3,000/- )
